I think he overcompliates plot here (or uses the wrong term). Plot is the causal sequence of events that is left when you remove all events that do not make a discernable difference on this causal chain. You can use the words beCAUSE, therfore, but to connect these events. Due to the causal natue, this propells the plot. The definition used in the lecture is the narrative/discourse. The "story" is the mentally reconstructed chronological order of events that can be told in different ways (narrative).

Writing as a craft is truly amazing. Its thoughtful and creative. All these instruments to deliver progress in a story to your readers. I'm not a writer but watch all his lectures because it is so insightful to understand all these things in what stories are about

It's crazy that he said you'll need to work for about 10 years before you get the chance to determine if the job is going to pan out - that's the same number that a lot of stand up comedians say you need to practice going to open mics and stuff before you really hone your craft and can start making a living. Interesting

First person has a great strength in that the author can hide their identity from the reader, withholding a lot of very basic information if done well behind the all-concealing word: I. "I did this." "I was that." Is the POV character a woman or a man? A child or an adult? A human or an alien? A bird or a potato? The character can be anything, and the reader won't necessarily know until you tell them, which can be used for lots of interesting reveals in the narrative.

Here are my notes I took in case anyone wants a summary (or to cheat I guess): *Magic Systems Fundamentals:* - If the reader doesn't understand the magic system's rules, there are no rules - Sanderson's laws 1.) Your ability to solve problems with magic in a *satisfying way* is directly proportional to how well the reader understands the magic - get the reader to react to the magic how you want - the magic is explainable 2.) Flaws and limitations are more intereting than the powers themselves - flaw = weakness; limitation = exclusive usage - What can't the magic do? What is it bound to? etc. - Limitations: - cost (economic, emotional, physical, mental, social, moral, etc.) - boundaries (specific parameters, "yes, but-") 3.) Go *deeper* into a magic, instead of wider - quality over quantity - if the magic plays a *minor* role, deal with the current characters using it, then leave it alone - you can write a sequel that delves deeper into it - it's "okay" to write rules of magic when you need to... but you SHOULD try what you've already done, expand it further, and *make it work* for the situation - set this up ahead of time in revisions!! - you can leave holes in or chip away at your rules - this leaves wonder and mystery, ehich can be enhanced through foreshadowing 0.) Always err om the side of what ks *awesome* - "This is cool, let's make it work!" - don't write yourself out of what was the awesome concept that started the idea - do it cuz it's cool * These laws are storytelling laws/rules-of-thumb adapfed for music - What if the magic doesn't work, in the story, as it supposedly should? - That can work! Ask yourself "what emotion am I looking for in the readers with *this disappearance* of magic?" "What is it *doing* for me?" - What if the magic is unlimited and overwhelming? - make the reader scared that the character will be forced to use the magic. - if they do use the magic, *make the bad thing happen* - think Ice King/Simon from Adventure Time - Is too many flaws/limitations possible? - yes, 100% - don't make the reader keep track of the rules on a spreadsheet - the best magics are the ones that are both elegant powers and elegant limitations

I find it weird that there's basically been no Sci-Fi addressed in any way so far, and even weirder that urban fantasy isn't a sub-genre of fantasy in this lecture. I get that Sanderson writes a certain type of fantasy, but still. Urban Fantasy has its own specific world building issues, because there's the lore of all the fantasy elements like in classic fantasy, but on top of that there's also the question of how all this interacts with and affects the development of the non-fantasy world, which makes it incredibly hard to write well. Unless, of course, you assume it's just current day normal world but with vampires or something, which is sad and reductive.

I love the costs in magic systems; it forces one to be creative and in videogames entire builds can be build around it. Most games for example use a magicka pool that is dipped in order to cast spells; the more magicka you have, the more, better and cost worthy spells you can cast. In Skyrim your magicka can become obsolute when your enchanting is high enough and magic becomes free to cast (I found that boring). But economic coud also play a part, with a bit of tweaking; scrolls are one time shoot and forget, can be cast by anyone, but cost money to buy or resources to make. The same goes for staves, which have more uses, but will run out and need recharging with gems that cost money to buy or knowledge to be filled up. And then there is blood magic; where your limited (but often stunned) magicka pool can be filled up by sacrificing your own life forces, which takes time to recharge and can even be life-threatening when not used carefully. I love that type of variety.

I feel like Rule 3’s applicability is directly proportional to how hard the magic in question is. If your magic is soft, a lack of depth of understanding is a feature, and making a long list of things it can do adds to its unpredictability.

I’m currently having book middle sickness but I’ve recently had a breakthrough in that area. I find that I’m lucky I chose fantasy because while the first third introduced the characters and basic setting, I can use the second third to introduce new areas, or flesh out the mechanics of magic, monsters and setting while progressing my plot. If they have to go from point A to point B but point A is the start of the book and point B is the end, you simply need to make the in between a challenge that tests you characters and prepares them, while using your genre to its fullest by introducing the things that were more difficult to tie into the plot.

What about the boy are on Hawai on a vacation with his family. He get away of the motel where he and his family are to buy ice cream. He gets out fast so his mom can't notice him. After find a place to kill his disire and choose a flavor, he checks his pocket and there is no money. A line of people are behind him and the look of the client-serve won't turn things easier. . Jimmy was there about to pee in his pants when he feelt something warm on his shoulders. It was the right hand of his current "neighbor" Sara. The one the lives close to his family room at the motel. Today is her birthday and nothing better than ice cream to make a lonely day into a more bearable one. . "Don't worry" - she says - "I will pay this time" then laugh while she is waiting the client-serve break the ice. . "Aunty, you saved my skin!" - the boyed said - "in return I will accompany you on the way back, that's all right?" . "Of course!" - this time genuinely smiling for happiness. . The little boy almost is done with the ice cream when they hear a police siren. "They going in the direction of... I'm curious how would the author set up this kind of magic system: The author will give or leave bread crumbs for the reader to piece together as to how the magic in the story should be used or understood but somehow the author doesn't let the characters in the story use it properly perhaps due to a misguided or misunderstood notion of the magic but not the reader..would that be problematic?
